PARENTHESIS
A family archive built from passports, diplomas, letters, memoirs, photographs, stamps and objects — to make visible what has been lived through.
Parenthèse draws together nearly a decade of research into the Antaki archives — my own, and those left by my parents, Mona Fouad Rahme Antaki and Dr. Loutfi Antaki. The project traces the trajectories of a French-Lebanese-Syrian family across Aleppo, Damascus, Beirut, Riyadh, Paris, Montreal.
Conceived as a multi-format work — installation, book, exhibition, digital fragments — the project takes the documentary object as its raw material: a stamp, a diploma, a letter of recommendation become the matter of memory and narrative.
AXIS 01
The archive as material
Official documents, private correspondence, photographs, stamps. What the State preserves of a life, what a family keeps of it.
AXIS 02
The trace of displacement
Passport stamps, visas, naturalisations. Borders inscribed in bodies and papers, across three generations.
AXIS 03
Transmission
What passes from one generation to the next: a name, a language, a silhouette, a fragility. And what is lost along the way.
"A parenthesis is what interrupts without breaking. It is also what is closed one day, sometimes without our knowing."
